The Taiwan Design Expo, the country’s premier annual event for the design industry, is set to take place from 26th October to 10th November in Tainan, spanning an impressive 16 consecutive days. This year marks the fifth occasion that Tainan has hosted the expo, which will focus on the themes of “food,” “clothing,” and the city’s “hidden champions,” under the overarching title, “The Next 400.”
The expo aims to celebrate Tainan’s rich cultural identity and inclusiveness, highlighting the historical roots of the city while showcasing contemporary Taiwanese design. It illustrates how Taiwan’s oldest city harmoniously blends its ancient heritage with modern influences and diverse foreign cultures, creating a vibrant cultural tapestry.
A Hub for Culture and Creativity
The 2024 Taiwan Design Expo will be held at key locations across Tainan, including the Tainan Art Museum Building 2, the West Market, and the Banana Warehouse, creating connections between nearby art spaces and shopping districts. According to Hsieh Shih-yuan, Director of Cultural Affairs for the Tainan City Government, a local saying encapsulates the spirit of old Tainan: “It takes three generations of prosperity to truly appreciate food and clothing.”
Tainan gained prominence as a global maritime trade hub in the 17th century, significantly contributing to its wealth and nurturing the city’s vibrant culinary and textile heritage. The West Market, recognised as Taiwan’s first modern market and celebrated as the finest in East Asia upon its establishment, will serve as a key exhibition space during the design expo. The market will feature thematic displays focused on food and clothing, highlighting the richness and essence of Tainan’s local culture.
Innovation in an Ancient City
Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che underscored the innovative energy that permeates the ancient city. “Although Tainan has deep historical roots, it is filled with innovative energy,” he stated, pointing out that many of Taiwan’s renowned industries—including semiconductors, textiles, orchids, agriculture, and biotechnology—have their origins in Tainan.
The expo will take place primarily at the Tainan Art Museum Building 2, where it will showcase these hidden champions and highlight their local roots as they expand their reach to global markets. Mayor Huang warmly invites international partners to join the 2024 Taiwan Design Expo, encouraging them to experience how the city leverages design to vividly express Taiwan’s rich culture and diverse industries.
A Celebration of Design and Culture
As the countdown to the Taiwan Design Expo begins, excitement builds for an event that promises to showcase the best of Tainan’s creative talents and cultural heritage. Visitors can expect an array of exhibitions, workshops, and cultural experiences designed to engage and inspire. The expo not only aims to promote Tainan’s unique identity but also seeks to foster international collaboration in the field of design, making it a must-visit event for enthusiasts and professionals alike.
With its vibrant cultural backdrop and commitment to innovation, Tainan is poised to offer an unforgettable experience during the 2024 Taiwan Design Expo, where history and modernity coexist in a celebration of creativity and design.
