Bishop Auckland’s Christmas Town celebration, an event now widely celebrated in the North East, is returning in 2024 with an expanded programme set to enchant families and visitors alike. Running from Friday, 29 November, to Sunday, 8 December, this year’s Christmas Town will transform the town’s historic market square into a winter spectacle, complete with festive decorations, family attractions, and seasonal entertainment.
The 10-day festival, organised by local groups Baccanalia and Bridge Creative, builds on the success of last year’s event, which drew visitors from across the region. This year promises an even more extensive experience, featuring returning favourites like the ice rink, Santa’s Grotto, and the Ferris wheel, alongside new attractions designed to enhance the Christmas magic. A classic carousel, bustling Christmas market stalls, interactive Merry Makers Workshops, and character meet-and-greet opportunities are all set to join the line-up, creating an immersive holiday experience.
For evening entertainment, the popular Giant Tipi Bar will be the centre of attention, offering visitors a unique gathering space. The tipi will host a variety of performances, live music, and shows, adding to the festive atmosphere for those looking to enjoy Bishop Auckland’s lively evening scene. Entry to the town’s Christmas celebration is free, but some events and attractions will require tickets, which can be purchased through the Christmas Town website or by calling the event line.
Organisers and local leaders see the event as more than just festive fun. “Christmas Town offers such a magical experience for so many families, and this year, it’s going to be even bigger and better,” said Ben Tinkler, Managing Director of Bridge Creative. “The event not only creates jobs for local disabled people but also gives a significant boost to the local economy, helping to put Bishop Auckland on the map.”
Thomas Wales, Managing Director of Baccanalia, echoed the excitement, highlighting the community effort behind the event. “We’re thrilled to launch tickets for Christmas Town 2024 and are proud that this event remains possible due to true community effort,” Wales remarked. “With the other fantastic winter events in and around the town such as AGLOW, Christmas at the Palace, and Santa Express, I think we can confidently say we’re the Christmas Capital of the North!”
The community-driven celebration continues to enjoy strong support from local organisations, with principal partner Bishop Auckland Town Council and sponsor Bishop Auckland College lending their support. Several other local businesses and organisations are also involved, ensuring the event’s continued success and growth each year.
Tickets are available for specific attractions and can be booked in advance via the Bishop Auckland Christmas Town website or by calling 01388 540823. The organisers encourage early bookings due to the popularity of many of the activities.
With the promise of new and returning attractions, this year’s Bishop Auckland Christmas Town looks set to reinforce the town’s position as a Christmas destination in the North East, bringing seasonal cheer, supporting local enterprise, and celebrating community spirit.
