Loughborough University’s Burleigh Court Conference Centre and Hotel has officially completed a major refurbishment, ushering in a new era for the venue. The project, led by design agency Harrison, has transformed five key areas of the venue, blending the university’s rich academic heritage with modern hospitality.
The refurbishment, which began in January 2024 and finished in Autumn 2024, has revitalised Burleigh Court into a dynamic space that reflects both the academic culture of Loughborough University and its ongoing innovations. A key feature of the redesign is the creation of a new dining space, Fifty The Street, which was constructed under the supervision of Harrison’s in-house architect Alex Grey and Senior Architectural Technician Dan Curran.
The five distinct areas within the venue now seamlessly blend contemporary design with elements that celebrate Loughborough’s academic specialisms. The hotel’s location at the heart of the university campus provided inspiration for the redesign, highlighting everything from the institution’s world-class engineering programmes to its fine arts legacy.
Holly Trehearn, Senior Designer at Harrison, said, “Our goal was to combine Loughborough University’s academic history with modern, functional design. We are proud of the result, despite challenges like keeping the hotel operational during the refurbishment. It’s a space that not only meets the needs of guests but also showcases the university’s innovative spirit.”
Dean Concannon, Design Director at Harrison, emphasised the importance of collaboration, saying, “By understanding the university’s objectives and working closely with the Burleigh Court team, we were able to deliver a project that met both immediate needs and long-term goals.”
Imago Venues CEO Spencer Graydon praised the partnership with Harrison. “From day one, Harrison listened to our ambitions, and together we developed a concept that has transformed Burleigh Court into a premium space that serves both guests and the hotel’s operational needs.”
One of the most striking features of the new design is the display of artwork by current Loughborough University fine art students, alongside pieces by established artists with ties to the institution. The hotel’s reception area features works by former instructors, while the new restaurant extension includes a prominent piece by artist Avray Wilson.
Reflecting Loughborough’s engineering strength, elements of the hotel’s design pay homage to the university’s engineering legacy. The hotel bar’s circular elements, reminiscent of cogs and wheels, nod to partnerships with industry leaders such as Rolls Royce.
Other upgrades include a redesigned reception area with a self-check-in system, new external signage, and improved wayfinding to enhance the guest experience. Additionally, the “Thingumajig” room, housing a unique artifact from the university’s engineering department, provides an interactive educational experience for guests.
The refurbished Burleigh Court now stands as both a hotel and a living exhibition of Loughborough University’s past, present, and future, offering a space that meets the needs of modern conference guests while celebrating the institution’s academic achievements.
