The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has revealed plans to bring the world’s second Sphere venue to the United Arab Emirates capital, in partnership with Sphere Entertainment Co. The new facility will build on the success of the original Sphere in Las Vegas, which opened to critical acclaim in 2023, and promises to redefine the entertainment landscape in the region.
With a capacity of 20,000, the Abu Dhabi Sphere will feature cutting-edge technology and immersive experiences aimed at attracting both residents and international visitors. The venue will become a landmark in Abu Dhabi, which is positioning itself as a major cultural hub under the UAE’s Tourism Strategy 2030. The initiative aims to diversify the entertainment options available in the city, already known for its commitment to innovation in the arts and culture.
Speaking on the announcement, Sphere Entertainment’s Executive Chairman and CEO, James L. Dolan, said: “The vision for Sphere has always included a global network of venues, and today’s announcement is a significant milestone toward that goal. Sphere is redefining live entertainment, and we are proud to collaborate with DCT Abu Dhabi to develop Sphere in their city.”
DCT Abu Dhabi’s Chairman, H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, expressed excitement about the project. “We are excited to bring Sphere to Abu Dhabi in partnership with Sphere Entertainment. This unique venue will seamlessly integrate advanced technology with captivating storytelling, creating unforgettable memories for all who visit. This project aligns with our Tourism Strategy 2030 and will further establish Abu Dhabi as a vibrant hub for culture and innovation.”
The original Sphere in Las Vegas has been praised for its revolutionary design and use of immersive technologies, including the world’s largest LED screen. It has hosted major entertainment events and concerts, with its capabilities transforming how live performances are experienced. The Abu Dhabi venue is expected to follow suit, offering a similar array of events and shows throughout the year.
As part of the partnership, DCT Abu Dhabi will be responsible for funding the construction of the new Sphere, while Sphere Entertainment will provide expertise in design, technology, and operations. Sphere Entertainment will also receive a franchise initiation fee from DCT Abu Dhabi and will continue to provide operational and strategic support once the venue is open. The collaboration includes ongoing arrangements for creative content licensed by Sphere Entertainment, along with the use of their proprietary technology and intellectual property.
The announcement comes at a time when Abu Dhabi is enhancing its cultural and entertainment offerings, having welcomed more than 24 million visitors in 2023. The Sphere will further cement the city’s reputation as a global destination for innovative entertainment.
Once operational, Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to become a major draw, offering residents and tourists alike the opportunity to experience world-class events in a venue that merges technology and artistry in a way that has never been seen before in the Middle East.
The precise timeline for the construction and opening of Sphere Abu Dhabi has not yet been confirmed, but it is expected to be completed in line with Abu Dhabi’s broader 2030 development strategy.
