Miral, the leading developer of leisure, entertainment, and tourism (LET) experiences in Abu Dhabi, has announced a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy designed to position the company as a regional leader in sustainable tourism by 2030. The strategy aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative and aims to create responsible, innovative, and environmentally-conscious attractions.
The announcement, made by Miral’s Group CEO Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi, highlights the company’s commitment to integrating sustainability into every aspect of its operations. Al Zaabi explained that the strategy will ensure sustainable growth while contributing to the UAE’s efforts to tackle climate change. “Our Sustainability Strategy will guide our evolution, ensuring we deliver lasting value for both our stakeholders and the community,” he said.
Miral’s strategy is built on four pillars: creating sustainable experiences, decarbonisation and resource management, prioritising people, and promoting sustainable development across its destinations. These pillars reflect a holistic approach to sustainability that touches every part of the company’s operations, from energy management to employee welfare.
Sustainable Experiences
The first pillar focuses on creating enriching, sustainable experiences that foster cultural understanding and environmental stewardship. Miral plans to promote initiatives such as the Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center, which works on marine conservation and rescue efforts, while continuing to integrate educational elements into its attractions like Qasr al Watan. These experiences aim to raise awareness about critical social and environmental issues.
Decarbonisation and Resource Management
The second pillar outlines Miral’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and adopting more sustainable energy practices. The company plans to meet its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 through energy efficiency measures, the transition to renewable energy sources, and carbon offsetting initiatives. This will also include enhanced resource management strategies, such as water conservation and waste minimisation, with an ambitious aim to achieve zero waste to landfill.
People and Community Welfare
The third pillar focuses on people, emphasising diversity, inclusion, and the welfare of employees, including fair treatment and safe working conditions for construction workers. Miral also supports Emiratisation and offers professional development opportunities to its workforce. In addition, the company is committed to sustainable tourism practices and responsible supply chain management.
Sustainable Development in Destinations
Finally, Miral’s sustainability strategy aims to enhance the sustainability of its destinations. This includes offering greener mobility options, creating more sustainable tourism practices, and ensuring environmentally responsible procurement throughout its operations.
Miral’s commitment to sustainability is already evident in several initiatives across its properties. For example, the UAE’s largest solar rooftop was installed at Warner Bros. World™ Yas Island, which provides 64% of the park’s electricity needs during peak periods. The company has also collaborated with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) to advance marine conservation efforts through the Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center. Other efforts include the reduction of single-use plastics at SeaWorld® Yas Island and producing drinkable water from air humidity at Hilton Abu Dhabi, Yas Island.
Through its new strategy, Miral aims to set a regional benchmark for sustainability in the leisure and tourism sector, contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for the UAE.
