A cherished tearoom and guesthouse in the heart of the Elan Valley, Rhayader, is set to reopen after undergoing significant refurbishment. Penbont House, which closed in May last year due to challenging trading conditions, will welcome visitors once more following investment and maintenance work spearheaded by the Elan Valley Trust.
The Trust is now actively seeking a tenant to manage the site, which boasts a tearoom, a five-bedroom guesthouse, a self-contained manager’s apartment, and picturesque gardens overlooking the River Elan. The property sits near the Garreg-Ddu and Penygarreg reservoirs, offering a prime location in the Cambrian Mountains for walkers, cyclists, and holidaymakers.
Jonathan Davies, the Business Manager for the Elan Valley Trust, explained that the decision to close Penbont House was not taken lightly but was necessary due to the difficult economic climate and the Trust’s inability to manage the venue long-term.
“We closed the tearoom and guesthouse with heavy hearts,” said Mr Davies. “The cost implications meant the business was no longer viable, and the Trust itself lacked the resources and expertise to operate it effectively. However, we have now completed repairs and maintenance, and we are excited to reopen under a new operating model.”
The Trust is looking for an experienced and passionate operator to take on the project and unlock the site’s full potential. Mr Davies emphasised the significance of the property for the local community and visitors alike.
“We know how much Penbont House means to people in Powys and beyond,” he said. “The tearoom was particularly popular, and its closure was met with sadness. Reopening will not only provide a key destination for visitors to the area but also offer a boost to the local economy.”
Penbont House’s tearoom and restaurant can accommodate up to 80 guests, making it a versatile space for dining and social gatherings. The property’s location in the Elan Valley, covering over 70 square miles of dams, reservoirs, and rugged Welsh countryside, adds to its appeal.
Mr Davies highlighted the unique selling points of the property: “For prospective tenants, this is an incredible opportunity. The location and facilities offer a venture that makes sense both commercially and personally. We are seeking the right person to take this forward, begin trading, and build momentum as we approach the spring season.”
The Trust has already received positive feedback and interest from potential operators and remains optimistic about finding a tenant who aligns with its vision for the property.
Penbont House has long been a cherished part of the community, and its reopening is anticipated to be a significant milestone for the Elan Valley. With its stunning surroundings and improved facilities, it promises to once again become a beloved destination for locals and visitors.
